American linguist William Dwight Whitney criticized Paninian Dhatupatha and had written that there are only nine hundred authentic roots out of two thousand in Dhatupatha  .Whitney searched these two thousand roots of Dhatupatha in the Vedic and Sanskrit literature and he attested only nine hundred there. Therefore he wrote that only nine hundred roots are authentic ,remaining eleven hundred roots were inserted in Paninian Dhatupatha later by the pundits time to time .His challenge was unanswered for one hundred years from 1863 to 1963.

Dr. Vagish Shastri accepted his challenge in 1959 and began to churn the whole range of Vedic and classical Sanskrit ,Pali Prakrit ,Apabhramsa literature and Provincial languages.

On the other hand he caught the clue of old Iranian and European  languages. He came to conclusion that Sanskrit was used in two ways : as one was written and appeared in the literature but other was spoken .So this spoken stream of Sanskrit language merged in the later languages .Such as Pali , Prakrit, Apabhramsa and provincial languages, On the other hand Sanskrit also merged in Iranian and European languages.

Dr. Shastri searches uses of Paninian Dhatus in aforesaid languages and refuted William Dwight Whitney's claim. In this direction this was the unique work. Professor George Cardona quoted Dr.Sharsti’s this work in his respect book ‘Panini’.

This book won a greatest award of Sanskrit named ‘Kalidas Purskar ’in 1966.
